UK Working Days Calculator

Rates & guidance reviewed

Project timelines, notice periods, freelancers’ quotes and annual leave all care about working days — not just calendar days. Counting weekdays by hand is easy to get wrong around bank holidays.

This free UK working days calculator counts inclusive days between two dates, splits weekdays and weekends, and can exclude England & Wales bank holidays from a built-in list covering 2025–2028. On that list, the 2026 calendar year is 253 working days (261 weekdays minus 8 bank holidays).

Scotland and Northern Ireland observe additional or different public holidays. Always confirm with GOV.UK or your employer’s holiday calendar for contractual purposes.

What counts as a working day?

In everyday UK office use, a working day is usually Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Some contracts define working days differently (for example including Saturdays in retail). This tool uses Mon–Fri and optional bank-holiday exclusion.

Counts are inclusive: from Monday to Friday in the same week is five working days if no holidays fall in between. Inclusive counting matches many business “within X working days” phrases, but always read the contract. Pair a notice-period count with the redundancy pay calculator if you are also estimating a statutory leaving payment.

Bank holiday coverage

The built-in list follows common England & Wales dates for 2025–2028, including substitute days when Christmas or Boxing Day fall at the weekend. Dates can be confirmed or updated by government — check GOV.UK for the authoritative list.

Frequently asked questions

How many working days are there in 2026 in England and Wales?
253 if you count Monday–Friday and exclude the eight England & Wales bank holidays (261 weekdays minus those holidays). 2026 is not a leap year. Confirm the published holiday list on GOV.UK if a date is later substituted.
How many working days in August 2026?
20 in this tool, excluding the summer bank holiday on Monday 31 August. There are 21 weekdays in the month.
Are both start and end dates counted?
Yes. The range is inclusive. A single day selected as both start and end counts as one calendar day (and one working day if it is a weekday).
Which bank holidays are included?
A built-in England & Wales list for 2025–2028 (New Year, Easter, May holidays, August, Christmas and Boxing Day, with substitutes where relevant). In 2026 the Boxing Day substitute is Monday 28 December.
What about Scotland or Northern Ireland?
Those nations have extra or different holidays. This tool does not fully model them — verify on GOV.UK if your work follows those calendars.
Does this calculate annual leave entitlement?
No. It only counts days in a date range. Statutory leave rules depend on your contract and working pattern.
Is my data stored?
No. Dates are processed only in your browser.
